Curtiss P 40 Warthawk zajmował trzecie miejsce pod względem ilości wyprodukowanych modeli (15 000 sztuk) wśród amerykańskich samolotów myśliwskich. Pierwszy prototyp tego samolotu powstał 1938 r. po nazwą XP 40 i wyposażony był w silnik o mocy 1160 kM Allison V171019. Ten jednopłatowiec był uzbrojony w parę karabinów maszynowych o kalibrze 7,62 mm w skrzydle, a resztę przestrzeni zajmował dosyć niefortunnie skonstruowany mechanizm wysuwania i chowania podwozia.
